Torn on Adding Lisbon to a Barcelona/Mallorca Trip
Our take
As travelers increasingly seek experiences that blend culture and adventure, the dilemma faced by the couple planning their trip to Barcelona, Mallorca, and Lisbon reflects a common challenge among explorers today. With so many vibrant destinations to choose from, how do you make the most of your time without feeling rushed? The couple’s itinerary, with flights into Barcelona and out of Lisbon, presents a tantalizing opportunity to explore diverse locales, but it also raises questions about balancing time and experiences. For those considering similar journeys, such as the discussions in Advice on stops between Lisbon to Algarve and Mallorca and Lisbon?, this situation is a familiar crossroads.
The couple's inclination to explore Lisbon alongside Barcelona and Mallorca is an adventurous spirit worth celebrating. However, their desire to spend three full days in Mallorca, a destination renowned for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, might come at the expense of a more rushed experience in Lisbon. The essence of travel isn't just about ticking off locations on a map; it's about immersing oneself in the local culture, savoring the cuisine, and truly enjoying what each place has to offer. With only two days in Barcelona, they may find themselves limited in how much they can experience, especially when considering the many day trips available from the city. This could lead to a feeling of FOMO—fear of missing out—especially if they're drawn to the local bars and the tapas scene!
Moreover, the couple's focus on food, drinks, and local activities—as opposed to historical sightseeing—highlights a modern approach to travel that prioritizes enjoyment and relaxation over traditional tourist experiences. In this spirit, they should weigh the benefits of spending a day or two in Lisbon against the allure of fully enjoying Barcelona's vibrant dining and nightlife scene. For travelers looking to balance multiple destinations, insights from articles like Thoughts on our honeymoon itinerary? can offer valuable perspectives on how to curate an itinerary that embraces both exploration and leisure.
In conclusion, the couple's journey is a reminder that the best travel experiences are often those that allow for spontaneity and flexibility. While they may feel torn about including Lisbon, they should consider the richness of the experiences they can have in Barcelona and Mallorca. Perhaps a compromise could be to allocate one full day to Lisbon, using that time to enjoy the unique charm of the city while ensuring that the majority of their focus remains on the two destinations they are most excited about.
As travel continues to evolve, the question remains: how can future explorers strike a balance between seeing as much as possible and truly soaking in the essence of each destination? In a world filled with wanderlust, it's vital to remember that the journey itself is just as important as the destinations we choose.
My GF (Late 20s) and myself (Early 30s) have been wanting to travel to Spain for a while now, specifically Barcelona and Mallorca. Due to her work schedule, we are only able to go in late August (I know, I know) so we are prepared for the crowds and everything that comes with it.
We have heard great things about Lisbon and figured we would throw that into the trip too. So right now we have flights into Barcelona and out of Lisbon. The problem is that gives us 2 full days in one location, and 3 full days in the other 2. We definitely want to spend at least 3 full days in Mallorca, but I am unsure how to split the other days or if we should cut out Lisbon and focus on Barcelona and Mallorca. I know there are plenty of day trips we could take from Barcelona as well to explore.
Current Proposed Itinerary:
- Barcelona Day 1 (Land at 10am local time), Day 2, Day 3
- Travel to Mallorca Day 4
- Mallorca Day 5, Day 6, Day 7
- Travel to Lisbon Day 8
- Lisbon Day 9, Day 10, Day 11
- Travel Home Day 12
We want to enjoy some great food, cool bars (day drinking or a drink after dinner, no nightclubs) and enjoy the european coast/beaches. I surf (part of the draw to lisbon) but otherwise we are fine at a beach bar or club. We are fairly adventurous and like taking in the local sites and history and walking around, but I don't want to plan a trip around historical sites. The food, drinks, and actual activities are more important.
Does anyone have any insight or have done this trip or similar? We will be disappointed in Lisbon? Happy to answer any clarifying questions, and thank you in advance!
EDIT: We can both get by with Spanish but would touch up on it and take some lessons/tutoring before the trip. I have never tried to speak Portuguese, but would plan to pick it up at a beginner level.

- Advice on stops between Lisbon to AlgarveHi all, I have the front and back end of my Portugal itinerary down, pasted below. I am torn on what to do in middle, namely on day 5 and 6. As you can see below my initial plan was to take the scenic route and stop in Alentejo region for two days/1 night. I've considered 1) making day 5 a Cascais day trip and just driving straight to Algarve on day 6 using the highway. or 2) making day 4 a day trip to Cascais, then day 5-6 an overnight in Sintra, then straight to Algarve. Other stops i've considered are Evora, though a little out of the way. Would love insight from anyone whos done a similar trip. With the four days in the Algarve, I'm interested in any suggestions that would bring diversity to the itinerary. ie Porto Covo feeling the same as Lagos would be helpful to know. Day 1 - arrive LIS 4:40pm Day 2 - explore Lisbon Day 3- more Lisbon Day 4 - Sintra day trip Day 5 - was going to drive Lisbon to Alentejo, stop overnight in Porto Covo Day 6 - Porto Covo daytime to Algarve Day 7- Algarve (lagos or carvoeiro) Day 8 - Algarve (Seven Hanging Valleys Trail hike) Day 9 - Algarve (SUP Bengali caves) Day 10- Algarve (another town) Day 11- check out, fly to next destination (London) I would say my partner and I love to do something active each day followed by some chill beach time. We come from a beach town so its not entirely novel to use, but do love a quintessential eruo summer vibe. Good food is always appreciated, but we dont really drink. - Mallorca and Lisbon?Me and two friends are debating between Lisbon or Mallorca for a 10 day trip in the summer. Factors we’re considering are beaches (quality and ideally not too packed), good nightlife such as clubs and bars, and a mix of fun and relaxing activities. We also want to travel as cheap as possible but are still considering Mallorca despite it being a bit more expensive. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Radiant_Protection_4 [link] [comments]
- Thoughts on our honeymoon itinerary?Hello! We'll be taking a ~3-week honeymoon this September (maybe into early October). A bit about us: We enjoy walkable cities/towns with nice parks/green spaces, beaches, good food, coffee, wine, and cocktails! We prefer going to a nice wine bar or chill bar/lounge over a club. Right now we're for sure want to go to France and Spain, but are deciding between Italy and Portugal. Here's our rough itinerary: Fly into Paris for 4-5 nights (have been here before) Take the train to Cassis for 3 nights If we choose Italy: Fly to Milan for 3-4 nights Take the train to Bologna for 3-4 nights Fly to Barcelona for 3-4 nights (have been before) Take the train to Valencia (3-4 nights) Fly home (either from Valencia or travel back to Barcelona) If we choose Portugal: Fly from Cassis/Nice to Barcelona Take the train to Valencia Fly to Libson (4-5 nights, have been before) and likely take a day trip to Cascais. Fly home (Southern California) Also open to other city recommendations! Thanks! submitted by /u/tayyylooor [link] [comments]
