Central/South America advice
Our take
Hello,
I am looking at taking a 7-10 day trip at the end of May. I am flying out of Boston and assume I’ll have a full day of travel on both day 1 & 10. I have solo traveled to Europe and Asia before but have always wanted to visit central and South America. I am torn between Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Colombia. Safety is a factor in my decision (obviously). I am street smart and aware but understand certain risks exist even with that awareness in place.
I want to eat great food, drink coffee, explore nature, meet women and people, and get the most out of the 10 day max time allotment. With weather, cost, safety, and cultural/gastro considerations in place…any advice?
Very minimal Spanish skills but looking to learn more

- México, Belize, Guatemala Itinerary RecommendationsHi everyone, I’m currently planning a trip to central america in november 2026 and would love to get some feedback on my current itinerary. For reference: I am m/25 and would like to mainly sleep in hostels. I have some experience from backpacking SEA and would love to experience similar vibes here and there. 1. Does this route make sense logistically? Are the travel times between cities realistic? Is it too stressful? I enjoy seeing a lot, but I don’t want to spend my entire vacation just sitting in trains/cars or rushing from one landmark to the next. What should I adjust? Are there any places where I’m staying too long, or not long enough? Am I missing any highlights? What about safety concern along the route? I’m open to any suggestions, whether it’s regarding the pace, specific locations, or local travel tips. Thanks in advance for your help! submitted by /u/nloeken [link] [comments]
- I'm planning 10 days in El Salvador, then 6/7 Days in Guatemala. Can i do a day trip to Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras, Mexico?Okay, i have a lot of questions and need some help cause im not too experienced with travelling and don't really know where to look to answer my questions and figured some people here might be able to guide me and give suggestions. I'll try my best to make this an more organized post lol. 28F, white, solo travelling (will be 29 once this trip arrives). I'll be going in end of August, beginning of September and I'm not giving myself longer than 15-16 days because... work, boooo lol. But i want to get as many countries in as i can since i'll be in the area. I know i cant go to ALL of these countries in just 15 days, and i want to actually soak up the places and not leave feeling like i barely saw anything cause i was so rushed and it all passed me by, so i recognize i may not end up going to more than just El Salvador and Guatemala, but i figured i'd ask if anyone thinks a day trip or 2 to the surrounding countries would be doable or worth it - and if so, which ones and what i should see to make a day trip worth it. I have a lot of passion about travelling and love solo travelling so lay it on me!! So i'm starting in El Salvador with friends and some of them are from there (so while i may go off on my own for a day or 2, i'll otherwise have a great tour guide, so im leaning more on reddit and research for the other countries!), then im gunna go on my own to, I think, Guatemala. I don't want to just stay in 1 place though, i want to EXPLORE. In El Salvador, i'll definitely be seeing San Salvador. Where else might be worth renting a car for to go north of the country? Is there a boat over to Nicaragua for a day trip? Honduras day trip? As for Guatemala, I've heard of Antigua and Flores to visit, and i noticed Flores is pretty close to Belize, so i'm thinking if I start down south of guatemala then make my way up to flores, i could do some sort of tiny trip to Belize from there, then make my way home or something. I don't ONLY want to see the places EVERYONE goes to, you know? I want to leave the city im staying in and explore other parts of the country that are a near by drive and find some special things and places that haven't lost it's charm because of tourists. I want to see that big volcano but don't know where it is, ruins, beautiful waterfalls, forests, and hikes. Is Guatemala the kind of place to fly from place to place in or are there busses i could take from Antigua to Flores or literally anywhere or something? Would a hostel be safe in these areas? What suggestions would anyone have for this timeline im going for? What places should i avoid altogether to stay safe? Anyway, i think this gets my intention across. I know i cant see all of the places but maybe a few day trips to the country over is more doable than i imagine. Just looking for all of the possibilities to choose from! Thanks in advance :) submitted by /u/iamstokes [link] [comments]
- Having trouble deciding a country to visitSo I've been debating for about a month and having issues choosing a place to go for my first far trip as a solo male. I've been to Colombia and the DR that's all. I can stay a month or two whenever I go but also think of going to 2 different places but not sure as that takes a lot of planning. My problem is that I'm currently trying to learn Spanish, although I'm inconsistent but want to be more consistent and going to a Spanish country to immerse myself will be helpful. Plus I love latina (and black) women, so would love to date or even find someone where I can have a conversation with them and make myself learn Spanish lol. Just fyi, dating good women, not into prostitutes. That being said I don't want to go back to Colombia or the DR again (I love those places but want to try something different, latin America and Mexico is close to the USA. I'm trying to do my first trip far away. I heard Spain isn't great for African Americans. I'm trying to wait on Brazil since I'm in Spanish mode and trying to learn that. Not sure what to do. I'm open to going to other places and thought about South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Thailand, and China. I really want to go to South Africa but I heard there are safety issues and not being able to go out at night, which is kind of lame not to be able to go on vacation. I'm not a night life person and don't drink so maybe I'll be fine but I heard even in the day it could be dangerous. Granted I heard these same things about medellín and I went and had no issues. Thailand is high on my list, although I would go for dating as I'm not into Asians much but I hear they are even racist towards darker skinned people. Seems like there is something wrong with every place lol. I know as a traveler no place is going to be perfect and I will feel out of place in some form or fashion but I'm trying to make a decision in the next few days. I want to keep it cheap or moderate just because this will be my first time traveling far, not sure if I'll like the place, the food etc. so I'm going to save the more expensive trips for when I'm well seasoned. 😄 I'm 42 male (be 43 in about 3 weeks) African American from Texas. I only know English at the moment with some basic Spanish knowledge. Any recommendations? submitted by /u/Particular_Tomato161 [link] [comments]
