Having trouble deciding a country to visit
Our take
So I've been debating for about a month and having issues choosing a place to go for my first far trip as a solo male. I've been to Colombia and the DR that's all.
I can stay a month or two whenever I go but also think of going to 2 different places but not sure as that takes a lot of planning.
My problem is that I'm currently trying to learn Spanish, although I'm inconsistent but want to be more consistent and going to a Spanish country to immerse myself will be helpful. Plus I love latina (and black) women, so would love to date or even find someone where I can have a conversation with them and make myself learn Spanish lol. Just fyi, dating good women, not into prostitutes.
That being said I don't want to go back to Colombia or the DR again (I love those places but want to try something different, latin America and Mexico is close to the USA. I'm trying to do my first trip far away. I heard Spain isn't great for African Americans. I'm trying to wait on Brazil since I'm in Spanish mode and trying to learn that. Not sure what to do.
I'm open to going to other places and thought about South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Thailand, and China. I really want to go to South Africa but I heard there are safety issues and not being able to go out at night, which is kind of lame not to be able to go on vacation. I'm not a night life person and don't drink so maybe I'll be fine but I heard even in the day it could be dangerous. Granted I heard these same things about medellín and I went and had no issues.
Thailand is high on my list, although I would go for dating as I'm not into Asians much but I hear they are even racist towards darker skinned people. Seems like there is something wrong with every place lol. I know as a traveler no place is going to be perfect and I will feel out of place in some form or fashion but I'm trying to make a decision in the next few days.
I want to keep it cheap or moderate just because this will be my first time traveling far, not sure if I'll like the place, the food etc. so I'm going to save the more expensive trips for when I'm well seasoned. 😄
I'm 42 male (be 43 in about 3 weeks) African American from Texas. I only know English at the moment with some basic Spanish knowledge.
Any recommendations?

- I’m moving abroad to live and would like to stop somewhere along the way. I’m looking to experience something new that will challenge my perspectivesHello everyone! At the end of the year I’m moving to Japan and I would like to make a stop somewhere along the way (Spain > Japan). I have never experienced real culture shock and I would like to go somewhere that will show me something I’m unfamiliar with, surprise me in some way, challenge me or help me learn to appreciate something new. For some background, I grew up in New Zealand but have lived in Spain since I was young. Travel-wise, I’ve been to Japan several times, S.Korea twice, Thailand twice, Indonesia, India and Uzbekistan twice, as well as around Europe. I come from a travel family where both my parents travel for work, as do I, and my siblings have lived in Myanmar and Peru so I’m also familiar with those two areas. At the risk of sounding like a snob, I think I generally know the world quite well and have been lucky to be able to move around and meet all sorts of people, so I’m finding it difficult to land on a destination that might be truly challenging from a cultural perspective in Europe/Asia. I would like to visit Africa and Latin America but they aren’t really “along the way” in this case, and I think it’s better to leave those areas for the future when I can give them the time and energy they deserve. I’m looking more at Asia/Europe this time around. I briefly thought of Georgia / Azerbaiyan / Armenia but I think they’re quite familiar already. Or Egypt / Jordania / Oman, but I’m a young (30 y/o, if that counts as "young" :P ) woman travelling alone and might want to join a tour for those countries, which is out of my budget at this time. I'm thinking Western China might be a good option but I’m open to other ideas. TL;DR: Somewhere culturally or ideologically different, safe for a solo woman, somewhere located between Spain and Japan. Thanks! submitted by /u/NotACaterpillar [link] [comments]
- Looking for inspiration for a 1 month tripI have a month free this coming August and am desperate to do a solo trip. I have been to Latin America a few times and live in the UK so am trying to push the boat out a bit more. I'm not hugely into nature travel so many of the classic African destinations don't particularly appeal to me, nor do more touristy Asian countries like Thailand and Indonesia. If anybody has any recommendations for interesting, and mostly safe, destinations I would really appreciate some suggestions. Some ideas I'm currently exploring are Ghana, Northern India, China and the US, each having their own pros and cons - looking for a lightbulb moment here, but if anyone has any interesting insights about these places that would be great Thanks! submitted by /u/SpreadOk990 [link] [comments]
