Trip Peru Bolivia plan
Our take
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a 19-day backpacking trip to Peru and Bolivia (Sept 19 → Oct 7) and would love some feedback on my itinerary before I start booking everything.
Here’s the plan:
Sept 19–20 – Lima
- Arrival + 1 full day (Miraflores, Barranco, food, chill)
Sept 21 – Fly to Cusco
- Rest day (altitude acclimatization)
Sept 22 – Cusco
- Easy day, explore city
Sept 23 – Sacred Valley (Day 1)
- Pisac (ruins + market)
- Ollantaytambo (sleep there ideally)
Sept 24 – Sacred Valley (Day 2) + train
- Maras + Moray in the morning
- Train to Aguas Calientes
- Night there
Sept 25 – Machu Picchu (6am entry)
- Circuit 2
- Afternoon chill + return to Cusco
Sept 26 – Rest day in Cusco
Sept 27 – Rainbow Mountain
- Early tour (I know it’s high altitude, will decide based on how I feel)
Sept 28 – Fly to La Paz
Sept 29 – La Paz
- Explore + cable cars
Sept 30 – Oct 2 – Uyuni Salt Flats (3-day tour)
Oct 3 – Back to La Paz (rest)
Oct 4 – Buffer day (flexible / travel)
Oct 5–6 – Lima (end of trip, relax)
Oct 7 – Fly home
Main questions:
- Does this feel too rushed anywhere?
- Is 2 days in the Sacred Valley a good call vs 1?
- Rainbow Mountain the day after Machu Picchu (with 1 rest day in between) — reasonable?
- Is it worth trying to squeeze in Lake Titicaca, or better to skip?
- Any obvious logistical mistakes?
I’m traveling backpacker-style, not luxury, and I’m fine with early mornings but want to avoid unnecessary exhaustion.
Thanks a lot 🙏

- Does this 11-day Peru + Ecuador itinerary make sense? (Altitude optimized)Hey all — would love a sanity check on this itinerary. Tried to optimize for altitude acclimation while still moving efficiently. I’m a pretty aggressive traveler and enjoy hiking, but don’t want to completely burn out. 🇵🇪 Peru — 8 Days Day 1: NYC → Lima (Miraflores/Barranco) Day 2: Lima (easy culture + food day, sea level acclimation) Day 3: Lima → Cusco → Ollantaytambo (straight to Sacred Valley) Day 4: Sacred Valley (Pisac, Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo — keeping it light) Day 5: Machu Picchu (main event, optional Sun Gate or Huayna Picchu) → Cusco Day 6: Cusco (recovery + light exploring: ruins, San Blas, cafes) Day 7: Rainbow Mountain (early hike, full rest after, no flights) Day 8: Cusco → Lima → Quito 🇪🇨 Ecuador — 3 Days Day 9: Quito Old Town (historic center, food, cable car if weather is good) Day 10: Cotopaxi National Park day trip Day 11: Fly home Key thinking: Built in acclimation (Sacred Valley before Cusco) No travel same day as Rainbow Mountain Trying to balance efficiency + not feeling rushed Questions: Is Rainbow Mountain too much after Machu Picchu + Cusco? (I’m open to cutting it if it’s overkill) Is 2 nights Sacred Valley enough before MP? Is Cotopaxi worth it for such a short Ecuador leg? submitted by /u/Sekiroslays [link] [comments]
- Revised Cusco focused itinerary for opinions/thoughtsHi, Following previous responses and further reflection on how much I want a 'busy' checkbox tour vs deeper experience, I have decided that I will probably focus much more on Cusco/Sacred valley and other hikes. I am keen to hear specifically what I should prioritise within that itinerary/any unique or less well known ideas. Further context for me - I am relatively fit, but recently did Acatenango and went from totally fine at 3000m to feeling very ill after 3200m until the next morning, so I suspect while I don't tend to struggle at all with 6+ hr hikes, I do handle altitude badly. Have been learning spanish and would love to make use of that (limited vocab but A2/B1 level at present) and/or potentially take a few more 1:1 classes in Cusco, and would really like a mix of culture/history/adventure. Not looking to splurge where I can budget, but not looking to cut out anything genuinely worthwhile either even if it is expensive (e.g. top class stargazing, cheapish flights that save a day or two) Draft itinerary: May 5 - fly to Lima May 6 - walking tour ?food tour in evening vs try to book a world class restaurant if still space May 7 - Fly to cusco, move down to Ollantaytambo same day for easier altitude adjustment May 8 - Explore ollantaytambo May 9 - ?ideas, end at aguas caliente May 10 - buy tickets for machu pichu in the morning since no other option, unclear what to do May 10 afterwards, likely nothing May 11 - Machu Pichu, return to cusco May 12 + 13 - Cusco (ideas?) May 14 - Humantay lake May 15 - Relax, ?Spanish class May 16 - Rainbow mountain May 17,18,19 - Cusco (ideas?) May 20 - Fly to La Paz May 21 - La Paz May 22 - Fly to uyuni flats May 23 - 3 day tour to Atacama May 25 - arrive atacama May 26 - stargazing tour if possible since will be a new moon May 27, 28, 29 - Atacama ?day tour trips vs pick multiday tour (ideas welcome) May 30 - Fly to Santiago May 31 - Leave Santiago TLDR: - Is 13 days cusco plenty to really explore the area and worth the loss of world-class food in Lima or other tickboxes along the coastline - What do people actually suggest as activities/how intense are these hikes? submitted by /u/Logical-Ladder [link] [comments]
- Traveling to Peru - is this a good itinerary?Hi, I’m not sure if this is allowed but I wanted to opinions on my trip to Peru in early September. This is my tentative plan - Wednesday: fly into Lima arriving late at night - Thursday: spend the day in Lima exploring - Friday: fly to Cusco; we are planning on doing a five day guided tour to Sacred valley, Machu Picchu, rainbow mountain - Tuesday: tour ends and fly home My questions are Am I missing anything? Does the timing of this sound right? Will we be sorry not getting to Cusco a day earlier for acclimatization? We have the opportunity to add treks to Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, or Huchuy Picchu Mountain. Are any of these worth it? If so, which? Thanks in advance for any advice! submitted by /u/doublemartini [link] [comments]
