Should I get a rooster?

We have 2 mature hens and just got 6 new baby chicks. We had planned on just letting them free roam around the yard in the day and go back in the coop at night. Is 8 hens enough to get a rooster to protect them during the day or is it not enough? I don’t want them to be overbred but I also want them to be protected during the day from potential hawks/cats and what have you.
