Solo trip with purpose: looking for immersive, hands-on travel experiences. Anywhere in the world
Our take
Hey all,
I’m in a bit of a unique situation this year and hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here. I’ve got a decent chunk of annual leave to use around September/October, but my partner won’t be able to join me, so I’m leaning towards doing something solo.
Ive travelled quite a lot already (Male, 31), so I’m not really looking for a standard “go to X city and sightsee” kind of trip. What I do want is something that feels a bit different ideally something immersive, slightly challenging, maybe even a bit uncomfortable in a good way. The kind of experience that sticks with you and I can look back on with fond memories as this may be one of the last big holidays before having kids.
A few rough ideas I’ve had just to give a sense of direction:
Learning to scuba dive somewhere like the Red Sea
Helping out with a vineyard harvest in Tuscany
Doing a multi-day hike somewhere a bit wild
But I’m very open and honestly would prefer something more original than those if possible.
I’m pretty adaptable, happy being on my own, and up for trying something new (within reason). Doesn’t have to be luxury at all I’d actually prefer something more authentic or hands-on.
So yeah if you’ve done something a bit unusual, challenging, or just genuinely memorable, I’d love to hear about it.
Cheers!

- Help!! First time going solo!Hello! I have been wanting to do a solo trip, but I have always been so scared to do it. I finally decided to do it this year to cross that off my bucket list🥺. Hoping to do it around July or August. I’m a female in my late 20’s. When I travel I usually prefer more of a nature/island vibe (touching grass lol). I’m also a big foodie and I think that’s the best way to really learn about the culture of the place you’re visiting (besides reading about their history ofc haha). I like excursions and activities versus lounging at an all inclusive😭. I came here because I was hoping to get some tips on how to get started. I thought about joining travel groups but unsure if that’s the best route or actually try and plan it on my own. Any advice would be much appreciated! submitted by /u/Zealousideal_Ad6799 [link] [comments]
- Feeling lost trying to find meaningful travel opportunitiesI’m 29 and feeling really lost trying to figure out what kind of travel I actually want to do. I know I don’t just want a standard holiday where I walk around sightseeing for a week and come home. I think I’m looking for something more meaningful - volunteering, conservation, farm stays, eco projects, hostel work, cultural exchange, something where there’s a sense of purpose and connection while solo travelling. The problem is I genuinely cannot seem to find anything that feels right. I’ve looked into volunteering and Workaway-type things, but a lot of it either seems sketchy, exploitative, agency-based and really expensive, or it’s aimed at people who already live locally long-term. I actually did a Workaway before and had a bad experience, so now I’m second-guessing everything and struggling to trust opportunities. I feel stuck because I really want to get out of my comfort zone and do something transformative, wholesome, outdoorsy, and meaningful, but I can’t seem to find the actual “thing.” Every time I think I’ve found an option, I end up doubting it. Did anyone else go through this stage before solo travelling? How did you actually find meaningful opportunities abroad that felt genuine and safe? submitted by /u/Top_Duck_4601 [link] [comments]
- First solo international trip – looking for recommendations! [26M, US, ~$3K budget]Hey everyone, Planning my first solo international trip and would love some input. I’ve traveled to Greece and Cancun with family but never gone out on my own, so looking for somewhere that eases me into it. What I’m looking for: - Lush, green landscapes and good beaches - Rich culture with things to explore - Easy to get around (solo-friendly) - Solid nightlife that’s safe and accessible - Budget around $3K, flexible if the destination warrants it If you’ve been somewhere that fits, I’d love to hear: - How you got around - What you did / highlights - Any scams or safety tips for first-timers - Whether you’d go back Based in Texas, so open to anything. Shorter flights are a bonus but not a dealbreaker. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/EndPieceofBred [link] [comments]
- Where to go this summer? Open mindedHi, I'm unemployed and looking to take an awesome trip sometime this summer. Really really open to anything from 2 weeks from now till September. Length of trip anywhere from 4-14 nights. I would most likely be solo if traveling in May and June, but would be with my fiance if I go in July-August. Budget for flights around $500 for a weekish, $1200 for 2+ weeks (which is now not looking too great). We/I have been all over - Japan, Mexico, Belize, Canada, western Europe, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Norway. I love both massive cities and nature. I was thinking about going to Vietnam and doing the Hai Giang loop but the weather looks too hot for me. I'm really just looking for an adventure. We/I would be traveling from Boston - where would you like to go if you were in my position? submitted by /u/tengleha01 [link] [comments]
