Recent experience IAH → CLT → AUH → on American + Etihad?

Hey fellow adventurers! I recently flew from Houston to Charlotte on American Airlines, then connected to Etihad for my journey to Abu Dhabi and Colombo. I had an economy/basic fare that included one checked bag and a cabin item. I'm curious about a few things: How strict is Etihad with carry-on weight? Was the Charlotte to Abu Dhabi flight crowded? Are there any tips for this route? Also, does the fare include a carry-on and personal item?
Flying Houston → Charlotte on American May 13, then Etihad to Abu Dhabi and Colombo. Economy/basic fare with 1 checked bag and cabin item.
Wanted to ask:

- Anything to watch out for on this route?
