Question on Avis Namibia fine print inconsistencies

Our take

Hey everyone! I could really use your help. I have a rental car booked with Avis in Namibia through a German website, and I'm facing some serious inconsistencies in the fine print. Despite being assured that all insurances were covered, the official Avis terms seem to contradict this, especially regarding third-party damage and additional waivers. With my trip just days away, I’m feeling stressed and uncertain. Should I escalate this issue to consumer protection, or are there other options I should consider?

Question on Avis Namibia fine print inconsistencies

Hi all,

I‘m looking for some advice on a rental car booking in Namibia starting in a few days for three weeks. I booked a car via a German website (billiger-Mietwagen) from Avis. I made sure to check that the insurances are all covered, so protection against third party damage, theft, collision everything with zero excess is checked, glass, tyres and undercarriage all covered. This was as well confirmed when talking to billiger Mietwagen (the above screenshot is a confirmation from them saying that Avis accepted the conditions).

However, when reading the fine print (AGBs) from Avis (who are the contract holders) there is no mentioning of coverage of third party damages outside the Namibian legal requirements, covering only third party damage linked to injuries but not damages to third party equipment. Also, the fine print says that I need to buy additional waivers for no excess damages and coverage of all of the above (tyres, windscreen etc.). I’ve been in contact with Billiger Mietwagen and they confirmed to me on the phone this likely Avis made a mistake offering this package. They were in contact with the local Avis shop (after many many calls from my side) to confirm the conditions but the local station did not confirm but only sent their fine print again. To make it even worse the station in their email even stated that there is no undercarriage protection available, despite this clearly being offered in the Avis fine print.

I’m not happy with this and sent an email again asking for clear confirmation of the conditions I received confirmation of in the booking confirmation. As the vacation is only a few days out I’m kinda stressed about this to be in this situation.

I’m currently considering to involve the German consumer protection. I can still cancel the booking but of course there is no car available any more with similar conditions at this time, or only for 4x the price. Does anyone have any advice how to deal with this situation?
