PNW Roadtrip Suggestions
Our take
Hi all! I am planning a road trip for late May with my girlfriend. Neither of us have ever been to Oregon or Washington, we are from the east coast. I made a rough itinerary based on what we could get through in under a 2 week time while hitting the "can't miss" places. We also aren't huge hikers. My girlfriend has a bad back so any hiking we want to do is more on the light side but we can certainly still do a few miles.
We plan on flying into Portland and then flying out from Seattle. Here is my rough plan. Any advice on food or lodging would be greatly appreciated! I'm also open to any other tips or suggestions.
Portland
Day one - the city
- Thrift stores
- Restaurants/explore
- The sports bra
Day two - Columbia River Gorge
- Timberline lodge
- Mt. Hood
Day three - drive to Salem
- Silver falls
- tulip farm on the way (possibly out of season)
- stay one night in salem
Day four - drive to the coast about then up Highway 101
- Cannon beach and pelican brewing
- 2+ hours up the coast - stopping along the way
- Stay one night at cannon beach
Day five - Astoria
- Drive to Astoria and do a day here
- Stay one night here
Washington
Day six - eight - Olympia national park
- Drive up is about 2.5 hrs from Astoria
- Forks, la push, hole in the wall
- Olympic hot springs
- Stay in Port Angeles or forks for 2 or 3 nights?
Day nine - tacoma
- Glass museum
- Mt. Rainer
- Stay one night in Tacoma
Day ten - City things
- Stay the night in Seattle
- Fly out of here

- Oregon Coast from Vancouver down to the Redwoods and up inland through BendDisclaimer This is the itinerary I made before the trip. We more or less hit all the spots, though we missed a few and added some extra hikes along the way. It’s set up for one week and includes a lot of the coast. I would recommend spending only 4–5 days on the coast if you want to add more days do it inland. I didn’t include every hike we did but everything posted was on the itinerary, but I highly recommend looking for more trails while you’re there. Some of the best spots from our trip weren’t even on the original itinerary. Ask around, talk to locals, Park workers, or just explore that’s often how you find the hidden gems. Accommodation Stayed in state parks the whole way through. Just a tent and a lot of camping supplies. I brought my truck so we spent less time playing jenga every morning Travel Dates/Advise I went on this trip April 18-24. I wouldn’t recommend doing this trip in summer it gets very hot, the hiking can be tough in the heat, and many spots will be packed with people. We got lucky camping the whole time and only had two nights of rain. If you are deciding to do this trip I would go April or before May(September or off season) long as after it will be challenging to find spots and will need to book ahead instead of keeping a loose schedule, the viewpoint and hikes will also be packed Trip Cost The trip costed me around $1200 CAD between 3 people— Could be a lot cheaper (My truck also burns through 16.1L every 100km) but we did decide to buy a bit of stuff a long the way. The food was about the same price in Canada but in usd 24 usd for a meal (Burger/fries) at a bar but the beer was very cheap. State parks are $28-$38 per night. Gas was definitely the killer I spent roughly $600 usd in fuel. 100L tank in my 2011 silverado 4.8 so I didn’t constantly have to stop to fuel up. Try to fuel up completely before going into California, the gas prices out there pretty brutal sometimes. ITINERARY Day 1 (~6h 14m drive from starting point) Astoria to Manzanita area. Two solid hikes near camp easy to drop one if tired (plenty of time on Day 2). • Astoria: GOONIES HOUSE + the bridge is pretty cool • Cannon Beach: Quick stop (overrated, but worth a peek for Haystack Rock if you haven’t seen it) • South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail (1.5–2 hrs, ~5.6 km, 323m elevation). Great views • Elk Flats Trail to Devil’s Cauldron Overlook (and optionally all the way to Short Sand Beach—note: it was longer with a lot more elevation gain than expected) • Camp: Neahkahnie-Manzanita State Park Tip: Both hikes are close to camp, so minimal backtracking if you choose just to do one of them. Day 2 (~113 miles / 3h driving) mess around, short hikes, scenic stops • Start from Neahkahnie-Manzanita • Cape Falcon Trail (Arch Cape, ~7.2 km, 173m gain, 2–2.5 hrs) • Diamond Beach • Cape Meares Lighthouse • Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area • Optional add-ons: Yaquina Head Lighthouse + nearby trails, or more beach time • Camping options: Beverly Beach State Park or South Beach State Park Day 3: Central Coast (~136 miles / 3h driving) • Start from Beverly/South Beach area • Quick stop/mess around in Newport if interested • Yaquina Head Lighthouse (again if missed) • Bandon Beach area: Devil’s Kitchen, China Creek, Coquille River Lighthouse, Bandon South Jetty • Hike: Black Point (nice choice) • Camp: Bullards Beach State Park Day 4: Southern Oregon Coast (~98 miles / 2h driving) Nice driving day with short walks • Start from Bullards Beach • Face Rock (short ~30 min hike) • Cape Blanco area (several nearby hikes to explore) • Needle Rock • Battle Rock Arch (easy 30-min beach walk, bring a beer!) • Mary D. Hume (historic shipwreck) • Meyers Creek Pullout South • Natural Bridges, Brookings (~30 min hike) • Lone Ranch Beach • Camp: Harris Beach State Park Day 5: Redwoods transition (~130 miles / 3h 35m driving • Start from Harris Beach • Grove of Titans Trail (Jedediah Smith Redwoods area -1 hr walk) • Fern Canyon Loop (short 1 hour) • Camp: Florence Keller County Park (Crescent City redwood grove camping, convenient for the redwoods trails) Note: Florence Keller is in Crescent City, right by Jedediah Smith Redwoods—perfect for these hikes Day 6: Inland to Crater Lake (~574 km / ~7h driving) • Early start from Florence Keller • Crater Lake National Park — Check conditions/weather in advance (especially snow/ice gear needs). Rim Drive and some access can be limited or closed depending on season; west and south entrances are more reliable year-round, but plan for possible snow • Toketee Falls (short ~1 hr hike) • Camp: Bend area Day 7: Return leg (~762 km / 8h driving) • Bend, OR start • Multnomah Falls (Columbia River Gorge—up to 2 hrs very popular, go early) • Continue north to Canada (Langley) submitted by /u/Ok_Reference_9324 [link] [comments]
- Suggestion needed: San Francisco to Seattle road trip 6/5-6/9Hi, I need some suggestion for this trip. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/San+Francisco+International+Airport,+San+Francisco,+CA+94128/Drive-Thru+Tree+Park+Leggett,+67402+Drive+Thru+Tree+Rd,+Leggett,+CA+95585/Humboldt+Redwoods+State+Park,+17119+Avenue+of+the+Giants,+Weott,+CA+95571/Lassen+Volcanic+National+Park,+California/Manzanita+Lake,+California/Volcanic+Legacy+Scenic+Byway/Crater+Lake+Lodge,+570+Rim+Village+Dr,+CRATER+LAKE,+OR+97604/Trillium+Lake,+Oregon+97028/Cannon+Beach,+Oregon/Seattle-Tacoma+International+Airport,+17801+International+Blvd,+SeaTac,+WA+98158/@39.8763793,-120.6491334,6.24z/data=!4m62!4m61!1m5!1m1!1s0x808f778c55555555:0xa4f25c571acded3f!2m2!1d-122.3816274!2d37.6191145!1m5!1m1!1s0x54d4ce21c34ed9f9:0xe28d99d2827b25f!2m2!1d-123.7190225!2d39.8585618!1m5!1m1!1s0x54d463c73284e3b3:0x3716989f535a3fa!2m2!1d-123.9776858!2d40.3146515!1m5!1m1!1s0x809d5607c14138bf:0x8f34d8a77a666742!2m2!1d-121.4206552!2d40.49766!1m5!1m1!1s0x54cd51b7f9c69979:0xbc7c46167189c5d9!2m2!1d-121.5608158!2d40.5354368!1m5!1m1!1s0x54c635353ed6cb8f:0x9e351279605e3c24!2m2!1d-121.5965581!2d41.641509!1m5!1m1!1s0x54cf62cf0ed3f72f:0x137381de99936692!2m2!1d-122.140931!2d42.9098516!1m5!1m1!1s0x54be185d1c9fbbdf:0xd9a336f0bca80d5a!2m2!1d-121.7389868!2d45.2706606!1m5!1m1!1s0x5494a52740cfce5d:0x1bfe4f4cea593a21!2m2!1d-123.9615274!2d45.8917738!1m5!1m1!1s0x5490435542eafefd:0x99d3d9c4c7dc37b7!2m2!1d-122.3085926!2d47.4483652!3e0?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUwNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D I plan to travel with my parent from 6/5-6/9. fly in from SFO, and fly out from either SEA or SFO. we have not purchased return ticket yet. If there is no snow issue at Lassen Vocanic, Crater Lake and Mt Hood, we plan to fly out of Seattle, otherwise will fly back home from SFO. We visited Seattle, Olympic, Mt Rainier, Portland, Columbia Gauge, Multnomah Falls, Yosemite, Monterey Bay, partial big sur last June. This time, we plan to visit redwoods NP, Lassen Vocanic NP / Manzanita Lake (North entrance), Crater lake NP, Mt Hood, and cannon beach. This is a road trip, no hiking, it will be best if only need to walk a very short distance (like 100 feet) from parking lot to take a group picture. We don't have snow chain. and have some questions for the area with high elevation 1) Lassen Vocanic I am not sure if I need to skip Lassen Vocanic NP, that will cut 3.5 hours and 137 miles. internet post suggest I will most likely encounter snow issue too. 2) crater lake NP I’m aware crater lake NP rim drive and north entrance are closed for the season. internet says usually south entrance to the south rim should be open early june. as long as we can stand by the south rim, and snap a picture, it's sufficient. 3) mt hood after crater lake, we plan to drive to Trillim Lake, Timberline Lodge / Mt hood. Typically will we encounter snow issue around Mt. Hood? If early June is not good time for this trip due to snow condition, I probably will change plan and do SFO ->Yosemite -> Tiago road -> north to Lake Tahoe -> to SFO. I am also open to other idea. Thank you! submitted by /u/dumaseSz [link] [comments]
- CA to OR Roadtrip, help deciding between optionsThis seems to be a popular trip, I've found a lot of resources online on what to do and where to stay....My constraint is time. My son really wants to see the redwoods in CA, I'm trying to make it an epic roadtrip for him. I have 11 days available for this trip. I can't decide whether it's better to start in San Francisco and return there to fly home or to go all the way up to Portland. Anyone who's done a similar trip, I'd love some advice. I think there's going to be some sacrifices either way, and I'm wondering which one I'd regret missing out on more. It really boils down to more time to stop and explore in the trees vs the scenery and sights in Oregon. Trip A) Starting in San Francisco going as far north as Fern Canyon, then returning to San Francisco to fly home. Pro: More time overall to stop and spend more than a single night at most stops. Con: Miss out on Oregon coastline, parks, spots Trip B) Starting in San Francisco, driving up, and then flying home from Portland. Pro: We will see a lot more. Con: Slightly faster paced, only one multi-night stay in the middle. (1-3 hours driving each day) Some highlights I hope to hit: Glass beach One of the drive through a redwood spots Nature: Fern Canyon, Founders grove, Grove of Titans trail, Lady Bird Johnson trail, Trillium Falls, (maybe Karl Knapp trail) Trees of Mystery (my son really wants to do this) Oregon: Scenic roads, Sand dunes, Arch Rock state park, Natural Bridges, Thor's well, somewhere to see the seals & sea lions (I'm also open to other things I've missed, as I know less about this segment) submitted by /u/reol7x [link] [comments]
