Norway, Sweden, or Finland for January Northern Lights?

Our take

Hey fellow adventurers! If you're dreaming of witnessing the magical Northern Lights this January, you’re in for an epic experience! Between Oslo and Tromsø in Norway, or Abisko and Rovaniemi in Sweden and Finland, each destination offers unique charm and adventure. However, keep in mind the travel logistics, especially to Abisko, which may require a longer journey.

Hi everyone, I am planning for a trip to see the Northern Lights in early January next year, and I am debating which country to choose for a 3-4 nights trip. I have not been to any of these countries before, so I would love to hear your thoughts.

Right now, I am debating between Oslo and Tromsø or Abisko and Rovaniemi. However, it looks like it may be a bit difficult to get to Abisko since there are no direct flights from Stockholm, and the train ride seems quite long.

I will be flying from Paris and will need to head to Austria after spending 3 nights in one of these destinations. Which option would be the best for my itinerary and for maximizing my chances of seeing the Northern Lights?

Thank you in advance!
