Is late September–October a good time to see rough ocean conditions in New Zealand, or would March be better?

Our take

Hey everyone! I'm planning an adventure to New Zealand between late September and the end of October, and I'm super excited about exploring its dramatic coastlines. I absolutely love watching the ocean when it's rough—think big waves and strong winds while standing on cliffs! I'm curious to know if this time of year is ideal for experiencing those thrilling ocean conditions, or if March would offer even better opportunities. If you have any must-see coastal spots where the ocean’s power shines, please share your recommendations!

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to visit New Zealand sometime between late September and the end of October. One thing I really enjoy when traveling is dramatic coastlines and watching the ocean when it’s rough — big waves, strong winds, and standing on cliffs looking at the sea.

Would that time of year be good for that, or would March be a better time to experience stronger ocean conditions?

Also, if there are specific coastal spots where this is especially impressive, I’d love to hear your recommendations.
