Good burner phones when traveling to higher risk countries

Our take

Traveling to higher-risk countries like Colombia can be an exciting adventure, but it’s smart to be prepared, especially when it comes to your tech. Many travelers opt for burner phones to avoid the stress of losing valuable information or an expensive device. If you're considering a cheaper phone with good camera quality, the Samsung S23 is a solid choice at under 300 CAD used.

Hi sub

29M I am traveling to colombia (medeillin, salento, cartagena, bogota) in a few weeks with 3 other guy friends and I read so many stories of people getting mugged so I thought I should ask here to better prepare myself.

I know the basics such as don't wear jewelery, flashy clothes, no phones in pocket, no dar papaya.

Does anyone use a burner phone when traveling to these countries? As in you don't mind it if it gets stolen. I currently have an iphone 14 and I have a lot of authentication, bank account and social media on there. I do have the phone backed up to icloud but it will still be a lot of trouble recovering everything.

I am thinking of getting a cheaper phone with a similar camera quality because I don't want to miss out on potential beautiful memories.

If you did carry a burner phone, which one did you pick? I am leaning towards samsung s23 and i can get it under 300cad used. Any other suggestions are also appreciated.
