Budapest during last winter

Our take

Budapest in winter glows with epic energy, turning the Danube’s fog‑kissed skyline into a bold, adventurous playground for the main character in every traveler’s story. From the dazzling Parliament façade to the iconic Chain Bridge, the city’s grand sights sparkle alongside tiny, unforgettable details—like the historic yellow trams racing past the green arches of Liberty Bridge. A moving pause at the “Shoes on the Danube Bank” memorial adds depth, while locals and tourists skating at Vajdahunyad Castle’s massive ice rink radiate unstoppable sunshine.

Budapest during last winter

I recently spent some time exploring Budapest during the winter months. The city has this incredible, slightly moody atmosphere when the temperature drops, especially with the fog rolling off the Danube River. I really wanted to capture a mix of the grand, iconic sights—like the Parliament building and the Chain Bridge—but also the smaller details that give the city its character.

The historic yellow trams are such a photogenic lifeline of the city, standing out perfectly against the green of Liberty Bridge. A particularly sobering and moving stop was the 'Shoes on the Danube Bank' memorial, a stark reminder of the city's WWII history right on the edge of the water. Despite the winter chill, seeing locals and tourists alike skating on the massive ice rink in front of Vajdahunyad Castle brought a lot of warmth and life to the trip.

Highly recommend visiting Budapest in the off-season if you don't mind bundling up!
