Best/favourite places to travel with a family in January?
Our take
As families look to escape the routine of everyday life, January presents an exciting opportunity for adventure and exploration. With kids aged 7 and 9, the world is at their fingertips, and parents are eager to find destinations that cater to both the adventurous spirit of children and the cultural curiosity of adults. For families seeking recommendations, the inquiry from u/cloudiedayz on Reddit is a relatable one, as it highlights the desire to experience something new outside of familiar territories like Thailand, Bali, New Zealand, and Vietnam. For those in similar shoes, seeking out places that offer a mix of cultural sites, outdoor activities, and kid-friendly experiences is essential. When considering the options for travel in January, families have the flexibility to explore both warm and cold destinations, which can significantly enhance the experience. Warm locales provide opportunities for beach days, water activities, and outdoor adventures, allowing kids to bask in the sun while discovering new cultures. On the other hand, colder climates can offer unique winter sports, festive atmospheres, and the chance to introduce children to snow-covered landscapes. The balance between these two types of destinations is what makes planning so thrilling—there's an endless array of possibilities! The key is to find places that not only excite the kids but also offer enriching experiences for the entire family.
In Europe, destinations like Spain or Portugal can be excellent choices during January. These countries boast mild weather, stunning architecture, and rich histories, making them perfect for family exploration. The vibrant cities of Barcelona or Lisbon offer a wonderful mix of cultural sites, delicious cuisine, and activities tailored for families. Alternatively, families could venture to ski resorts in the Alps for an exhilarating winter experience. Imagine the joy of hitting the slopes together, followed by cozy evenings by the fire—it's a magical way to bond! These experiences can foster creativity and a sense of adventure, which is what family vacations should be all about.
Regardless of destination, it’s essential to embrace the spirit of exploration. Travel is not merely about visiting new places; it’s about creating lasting memories and connecting with one another in a dynamic environment. As parents, finding destinations that encourage interaction, spontaneity, and laughter among family members can lead to deeper connections and shared stories that will be cherished for years to come. This journey goes beyond the typical tourist attractions and dives into meaningful experiences that allow families to grow together.

So, what will your family discover next?
We’re a family of 4 (2 kids aged 7 and 9) looking to travel to somewhere (or possibly multiple destinations) for around 4 weeks in January.
We’re from Australia and would prefer somewhere outside of Australia. We’ve also been to Thailand, Bali and New Zealand a few times and Vietnam once so would prefer somewhere new. Our kids are at an age now where they fly well, are happy to try different foods and are happy to do a mix of activities (cultural sites, walks, etc. mixed in with more typical kid friendly activities).
We’re open to warm or cold destinations.
