15 days in Armenia and Georgia
Our take
Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I are travelling to Armenia and Georgia from May 2 to May 17. We arrive in Yerevan at 12:00 on May 2 and fly out of Tbilisi at 14:00 on May 17.
Our rough plan is:
- spend around 2–3 days in each capital
- spend no more than 5 days total in Armenia (not because we’re less interested, just because this time we’d like to spend more time in Georgia)
- use the rest of the trip to explore Georgia
- take the night train between Yerevan and Tbilisi
- ideally do a 2–3 day hike/trek in Georgia
What we’re most interested in is:
culture, food, city life, Soviet/Brutalist architecture, and as much nature and mountains as possible
Our main questions are:
- Armenia: is it worth renting a car for just 2–3 days outside Yerevan?
Would it make sense to drive all the way to Goris, or is that too much for such a short time?
Would we be better off staying based in Yerevan and doing day trips instead?
- Georgia: same question about renting a car from Tbilisi.
I was considering spending most of our Georgia time doing a road trip through the northern mountain regions, crossing from one side to the other and stopping for a 2–3 day trek along the way.
Does that sound like a great plan, or would we miss too much by focusing mostly on that part of the country?
- Early May conditions in Georgia: what are the mountains and trails usually like at that time of year?
Is there still a lot of snow in the higher regions?
Are multi-day hikes realistically doable, or should we focus on lower-altitude areas?
We’d really appreciate any suggestions, especially from people who’ve travelled there in early May. Also very happy to hear recommendations for:
- the best region for a 2–3 day trek
- scenic road trip routes
- places with great nature + architecture + food
- whether we should keep plans flexible because of snow/road conditions
Thanks a lot!

- Georgia + Armenia TripI’m planning a family trip next month and right now I’m thinking of going to Georgia. I also had the idea of adding Armenia by traveling there by road, so it becomes a two-country trip instead of just one. I’m not sure if this is a good idea or if it would make the trip feel too rushed. For anyone who has been to both, is it worth doing Georgia and Armenia in one trip, or is it better to just focus on Georgia and explore it properly? I also want to understand how the road trip between the two is, like how long it takes, how the border crossing is, and if it’s an easy and smooth experience overall. Another option is to skip this plan completely and go somewhere else nearby instead, like Central Asia or somewhere like Serbia, but I haven’t really looked into those properly yet. Any advice or experiences would help. submitted by /u/Realistic_Rip_7272 [link] [comments]

- Advice & suggestions on a 2 week Albania-Macedonia-Kosovo trip? -long post ahead!Hi All! I am taking a 2 week trip through the Balkans (Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo) with my mom and I'd like to get feedback and recommendations. We are in the early stages of planning our itinerary. So far, we know: We are looking for a mix of culture, nature, activities and getting the local vibe. We enjoy museums& exhibitions (no more than 1 or 2 per city, tho), outdoor activities (nothing extreme, things like hiking, swimming and canoeing) and city sighseeing but above all, our favorite thing to do is getting the country's vibes (things like markets, wandering around the street, local cafes and trying -actual- local food). We don't want our plan to be too rushed. 3 full days in Tirana and in Skopje might seem like a little bit too much, but we will use them as a base for a day trip each, to do laundry, and they are combined with other higher stress days. We'll be doing everything by public transportation, as we don't feel confident enough driving in this countries. Therefore we are planning our route around public transport availability and convenience (trying to avoid early departures, late arrivals, trips with short connecting times and having to carry our backpacks for longer than needed) We already have purchased our flight arriving to Tirana on Jun 17 at 5pm and departing from Tirana on July 1 at 12pm. This allows us to make a "loop" kind of route and also, it is the only airport with reasonable connections from out city. We're both seasoned travellers, will be travelling just with a personal item backpack and we are both very fit (can walk 25k+ a day like no problem.) So our temptative itinerary is: 1. TIRANA 17 Jun: Arrival to Tirana Airport around 5pm. Bus to city at 6pm, arrive to Hotel by 7pm. Go to a grocery store to get breakfast, snacks and water for the next days, chill walk. Dinner at a Zgara 18 Jun. Visit Tirana 19 Jun. Full day trip to Krujë (leaving around 9am, coming back around 6pm) 20 Jun. Visit Tirana, laundry. 2. DÜRRES 21 Jun. Bus to Dürres, 10-11.30am. Leave bags in Hotel (10 mins away from Bus station). 12-3pm: 40 Minutes leisure walk to Kallmi & Currila Beach. Beach time, swimming, picnic. Going back to hotel. 3pm-5.30pm: shower, siesta, relax. 5.30pm-9.30pm walk around city and to Dürres beach & promenade. 3. OHRID 22 Jun. Hotel Breakfast, shower, leave hotel at 10am (they allow luggage storage after check out). 10am-3pm: visit Dürres city, lunch. 3pm-6.50pm Flixbus to Ohrid 3pm-6.50pm. Arrive to apartment by 7.30pm, stroll around city. 23 Jun. Visit Ohrid Lake 4. SKOPJE 24 Jun. Bus to Skopje 9.30-12.30. (could also take it at 11.45am in order to have more time in Ohrid). Arrive to hotel, visit Skopje, groceries, laundry. 25 Jun Matka Canyon full day trip: Bus N60 at 8.45am, arrive to the Canyon by 10am. 2 hour Canoe rental, then mountain hike. Bus back to Skopje at 4.20pm 26 Jun. Visit Skopje 5. PRISTINA 27 Jun. Bus to Pristina 10.10-12.10 am 28 Jun. Visit Pristina 6. SHKÖDER 29 Jun. Bus to Shköder 08.00-11.50am. Visit Shköder 30 Jun. Visit Shköder 1 Jul: Van to Tirana Aiport 07.30-09.30am, for a 12pm flight. *i did not include what we'll be visiting in each city to avoid making the post longer than it already is. So, what do you thing about this itinerary? Does it feel too rushed or too slow? We initially considered going to Berat but travel time was too long and stressful so we subbed it for a day trip to Krujë. We also considered Podgorica but the only bus from Prizren or Pristina arrives at 11.30pm and we are already visiting 3 capital cities. Right now we are thinking if we should include Prizsen in our itinerary, either seeing Pristina as a "day trip" (like, going from Skopje to Pristina in the morning and then from Pristina to Prizren in the afternoon) our maybe spending one night in Pristina and one night in Prizren. We would appreciate feedback on this itinerary and any advice about local "off the beaten path"/quirky/ truly local experiences and food. - Memories from the few days I spent in ArmeniaMount Ararat & Khor Virap Monastery Control room at the ROT54 in Orgov Kitty cat at Haghpat Monastery 13:20, an alternative/artsy place in Yerevan Symphony of Stones OG Ladas at a garage in Ashtarak Abandoned GAZ-21 Volga in Gyumri View from an abandoned Yakovlev Yak-40 near Ashtarak We spent 5 days in the country during a Caucasus trip between friends. Coming from Switzerland, it was a true change of scene! The landscapes were often arid and vast and felt unique. You can definitely feel post-USSR vibes throughout the country. It did feel like time travelling sometimes, but in various places one can see modern infrastructure and signs of what felt like a strong economical growth. As urban explorers, there were many abandoned locations we could visit, most of which are guarded by grandpas who asked for a small "donation" in order to let us through. The capital, Yerevan, felt very modern and safe in the center with some unique buildings. However, we got stared at a lot as a group of 4 straight guys, some of us wearing a few ear & facial piercings. It didn't feel like people were staring out of hostility, more out of curiosity but we surprinsingly didn't get as many looks in smaller towns. Overall, the Armenian people seemed mostly friendly and willing to help whenever. The food was delicious, if you like well-prepared meat, grilled vegetables and nice flat bread you're in for a treat! In addition to these "basics" there was also a fair amount of interesting & tasty dishes. To get around, we had a rental car which seemed like a must. That being said, you must feel confident behind the wheel to drive there as the roads are not in great condition with lots of potholes, and the other drivers' behaviour is often erratic, especially in Yerevan where it doesn't help that the road infrastructure is not the best. Overall, we had an amazing time there! submitted by /u/shutter_getaway [link] [comments]
